The short answer: Home 8mm film lasts about 40 years at room conditions (21°C, 50% humidity) before vinegar syndrome sets in, according to the Image Permanence Institute. Cold storage at 4°C stretches that to roughly 350 years. Color dyes fade on their own separate clock, and every projector run does more damage than time itself. Most family reels are already past 50.
If you have inherited a box of small metal cans, your grandfather's wedding, the first family trip, the birthdays nobody remembers filming, here is the good news first: film is the great survivor of home media. It outlives every videotape format by decades. But it does have a clock, and that clock has been running for a very long time. These are the real numbers, from the institutions that run the world's film archives.
Why does film deteriorate at all?
Home 8mm, Super 8 and 16mm were almost always shot on cellulose acetate, the "safety film" that replaced flammable nitrate. Acetate film runs on two separate clocks: the plastic base, which decomposes chemically over decades, and the color layer, made of delicate organic dyes that fade at their own pace. For perspective, the Library of Congress puts the practical lifespan of magnetic videotape at just 10 to 30 years. Your 1960s film beats your 1990s VHS by a wide margin. It just is not immortal.
What is vinegar syndrome, and how long until it starts?
As the acetate base breaks down it releases acetic acid, which is what gives old reels that sharp vinegar smell. According to the Image Permanence Institute's storage guide, film kept at 21°C and 50% relative humidity reaches the onset of decay after about 40 years; at 4°C, after about 350 years. In a hot attic or storage room that passes 35°C every summer, the number shrinks further.
Here is the part that matters most: the process is autocatalytic. The acid the film releases speeds up its own decomposition, which is why the National Film Preservation Foundation warns that once it begins in earnest, the film's remaining life is short. It is also contagious in practice: acid vapor from one reel accelerates its neighbors in the same box. The simplest home test is your nose. Open the can and smell. Have my film's colors already faded?
That depends on the stock. Most home Super 8 was shot on Kodachrome, and here lies a beautiful paradox: Wilhelm Imaging Research data gives Kodachrome some of the best dark-storage stability ever measured, roughly 185 years to a 20% loss of its least stable dye. Yet the same Kodachrome is among the worst films ever made under projector light: the Library of Congress notes visible fading in Kodachrome slides within about ten minutes of cumulative projection. Your reels' color survived precisely because they sat in the dark, and every screening spends that capital.
Ektachrome and other E-6 stocks hold about 75 to 80 years in dark storage, and older versions fade much faster, usually toward pink and magenta. Fading is not a death sentence: much of the information survives in the film, and after scanning we recover it in our dedicated color suite with restoration and color correction. The surprising outlier is black-and-white negative film, which can last for centuries.

Did that last projection damage the film?
Probably, at least a little. Acetate film shrinks as it ages, typically to between 1.25% and 2%, and Kodak considers anything above 1% shrinkage unsafe to project: the sprocket holes no longer match the projector's claw. Project it anyway and the claw punches new holes, brittle film snaps mid-reel, the lamp cooks any frame that stops in the gate, and fresh scratches accumulate with every pass. In other words, a family reel shot 50 or 60 years ago has most likely crossed the safe-projection threshold already. That is why we scan it with true frame-by-frame scanning on our Muller HDS+, which transports the film gently with no claw engagement at all. Even shrunken or damaged film gets its final "screening" safely, without a projector.
How should I store the reels until scanning?
Three words: cool, dry, dark. The National Film Preservation Foundation recommends 20% to 50% relative humidity and the lowest practical temperature, with minimal fluctuation. Translated into a real home: an interior closet in an air-conditioned room beats an attic, garage or storage shed by a mile. Do not seal acetate film in plastic bags; the acid vapor gets trapped inside and accelerates the decay, so cans need to breathe. And if one reel already smells of vinegar, keep it away from the others, because it will speed them up.

How do I know if my film is already damaged?
Open the can and smell it. A sharp vinegar odor is the classic sign that vinegar syndrome has begun. Other signs: curling, stiffness or stickiness. Film that looks fine can still be in the early stages, because the smell appears before visible damage.
My film already smells like vinegar. Can it still be saved?
In most cases, yes. Film in the early and middle stages of vinegar syndrome can be scanned frame by frame on our machine, which never pulls the film by its sprocket holes, so even shrunken film passes through safely. What you must not do is run it through a projector.
