The short answer: Because a black-and-white image has no dyes to fade. Silver-gelatin black and white lasts a century and more with proper processing (Library of Congress). Colour is three dye layers fading at different rates, hence the cast. But the acetate base ages regardless: vinegar syndrome starts after roughly 40–50 years at room temperature (IPI, NFPF). Grandpa's picture survived; the film carrying it may not.
Open a mixed box: 8mm reels from the 1950s in crisp black and white, beside Super 8 from the 1970s gone orange-pink. The younger films faded; the older did not.
Why is black and white so stable?
In black-and-white film the image is metallic silver grains held in gelatin — no dye to break down in light or heat. The Library of Congress rates silver-gelatin the most stable photographic material: a century and more, provided the lab processed and washed it properly.
What happens to colour over the years?
A colour image is three dye layers — cyan, magenta, yellow — each breaking down at its own rate; when one fades faster, the whole film takes on a cast. Wilhelm measures about 75–80 years in dark storage for Ektachrome (E-6); older generations fade faster, typically to magenta. Colour prints of the 1960s–80s are the weakest link: per NARA they fade even in a closed album, since dark fading depends on heat and humidity. More in do photos and slides fade.
Is Kodachrome really almost eternal?
In the dark, almost: per Wilhelm the most sensitive Kodachrome dye needs about 185 years in dark storage to lose 20 percent of its density (measured on slides; for home movies we apply it qualitatively). Under projection it is among the worst: the Library of Congress reports significant fading within about 10 minutes, and Wilhelm found one projector hour harms Kodachrome as much as 2.5–3 hours harm Ektachrome.
If the image survived, why is the film falling apart?
Because image and base age separately. Almost every home movie sits on cellulose acetate, which decomposes and releases acetic acid — vinegar syndrome — whatever the image. Per IPI and NFPF, onset at room temperature comes after about 40–50 years, and just 15°F cooler delays the first signs by 150 years. How do we scan and restore?
Every reel is inspected by hand before scanning — perforations, flexibility, splices, vinegar smell — and repaired before, not during. The scan is frame by frame on a Filmfabriek Muller HDS+. Faded colour goes to our film restoration and colour correction service, which rebalances the three layers; files come as ProRes, MXF or MP4. Kodachrome slides are scanned on an Epson V850 Pro with Digital ICE deliberately off — the silver layer misleads the infrared. More on frame-by-frame film scanning.
