Converting Tapes and Film Yourself — The Honest Guide (and When Not To)

The short answer: Yes, you can convert at home — mainly video tapes and printed photos — under clear conditions: a working, clean player of the right format, a capture device, plenty of real time, and material that is neither damaged nor irreplaceable. Film reels (8mm, Super 8, 16mm) are the exception: not on a projector, and certainly not by filming the wall with a phone. Mould, a vinegar smell, precious material or hundreds of tapes are lab work. Here is the honest guide, including the part where we tell you when not to come to us.

We are a lab that makes its living from conversions, and still we will say it plainly: if you have three tapes from a holiday a few years ago, a camcorder that works and a free evening — do it at home and enjoy it. The question is not "whether you can", but what you are risking, and when the risk outweighs the saving.

What do you really need to convert a video tape at home?

Three things, and the first is the hard one. A player for your format: VHS needs a video recorder, VHS-C an adapter or the original camcorder, Video8 and Hi8 a camcorder or dedicated deck, MiniDV a camcorder with a digital output. If you are not sure what you have, start with our guide to identifying your tape. And a trap that catches many: a Digital8 tape looks exactly like Hi8 — same shell, same size — but is recorded digitally. Early Digital8 camcorders also play analogue Hi8, many later ones do not, and an analogue Hi8 camcorder will never play Digital8. Same tape, two languages.

Second: a capture device — the USB box that takes the analogue signal and records it to a computer — and the right cables. Third: time. Conversion happens in real time and there is no shortcut: a two-hour tape is two hours of recording, plus a retry when something jams halfway. And at every stage, one rule: the player is the quality. Dirty heads smear the picture, and every copy generation loses sharpness and colour that will not come back.

What can a home conversion not do?

Four things, in rising order of importance. First: correct timing. Analogue video depends on precise timing of every line; old tape on a domestic player gives a picture that sways, with bands and "snow". A time-base corrector (TBC) rebuilds the timing line by line, and calibrated heads prevent much of the snow before it appears — neither exists in the living-room player. According to CLIR the magnetic signal fades over the years even without playback, and a tape's practical life is 10–30 years, so the older the tape, the more the machine decides.

Second: deal with mould. According to IPI, mould spores do not germinate below 65% relative humidity, so a tape that waited in a damp storeroom or basement is an immediate suspect. Playing a mouldy tape in your player contaminates the machine and infects every tape you insert afterwards, and the spores are a respiratory hazard. This is not a case for "let's try and see".

Third: a tape not played for twenty years. According to CLIR the binder holding the magnetic particles absorbs moisture and turns sticky — sticky-shed — on the shelf, untouched. The first run after decades is the most dangerous moment, as the Library of Congress and the NFPF warn: inspect and treat before running through a machine, not after. In our experience most twenty-year-old tapes can be fully converted — which is exactly why it is a shame to ruin one on a first attempt in a player that cannot stop in time. Fourth: a jammed tape. If the player has "eaten" the tape, do not pull. Switch off, and if the tape does not release by itself, leave it inside and bring both.

Why not project old film and film the wall with a phone?

Because it is the fastest way to destroy the film and get poor video in return. First, the projection. Old acetate film shrinks; by Kodak's guidance shrinkage above 1% is no longer safe to project, and typical old film has shrunk 1.25–2%. Projector sprockets, made for film at its original size, tear shrunken perforations. Second, the filming. Home movies were shot at 16–18 frames per second, which Kodak also gives as the speed of a home projector. A phone records at a different video rate, and the result is flicker, frames swallowed and frames doubled, jerky motion — see why old film looks too fast. Beyond the rate, you are filming a wall: you lose the edges of the frame, the true colour of the emulsion, and most of the detail in shadows and highlights. There is no home version of this, and we say so not to sell but because we have seen too many films arrive torn after "just a quick check on the projector".

Is scanning photos and slides at home legitimate?

Printed photos — yes, entirely. A reasonable flatbed, at least 600 dpi for a standard print, patience, and it works; scanning photos at home or at a lab covers when it is enough and when it is not. Slides and negatives are another story: they need a scanner with a real backlight, at 2400 dpi for slides and 1200–2400 for negatives, and a phone app photographing a slide against a window is for sharing, not for an archive. And a warning from an unexpected direction: do not project slides "to see what is there". According to the Library of Congress, significant fading of a slide begins after about ten minutes of cumulative projection, and according to Wilhelm it is Kodachrome, the most stable in the dark, that is among the most sensitive to projector light. Photos stuck to each other or to glass — do not force them apart and do not wet them; scan through the glass as they are, or bring them in.

When is doing it yourself a good choice?

When all of the following hold: a few tapes, not a box; relatively recent, stored in the house rather than a storeroom; no smell, no white powder, no warped shell; you have the player, and it works and is clean; there is another copy, or the material is not irreplaceable; and above all, you enjoy it. If so, a few tips from us: clean the player first, record to a file with minimal compression and keep it as the master, do not erase the tape afterwards, and back up 3-2-1 — three copies, two kinds of media, one outside the house.

When not — and when to hand over to a lab?

Mould. A vinegar smell. Irreplaceable material — the parents' wedding, the person who is gone, the only film there is of them. Hundreds of tapes, because hundreds of tapes in real time are months of evenings. Film reels, always. A jammed tape, a wet tape, a tape that squeals. In every one of these cases the saving is smaller than the risk. With us every tape and every reel is inspected by hand before it touches a machine, and since 2006 more than 5,000,000 frames and photos have passed through our studio — including quite a few that arrived after a home attempt went wrong. There is no shame in that; it is just worth knowing where the line is in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a VHS tape with my phone?

Not directly. You need a VCR and a capture device; filming the TV screen with a phone gives a far worse result than what is on the tape, and what is lost on the way will not come back.

I have an old Hi8 camcorder. Will it play all my tapes?

Not necessarily. A Digital8 tape looks identical to Hi8 but is recorded digitally, and an analogue Hi8 camcorder will not play it. Check what is written on the camcorder and on the tape.

The player ate the tape in the middle of the conversion. What now?

Do not pull. Switch the machine off, and if the tape does not release gently, leave it inside and bring both to us.

I scanned photos at home at a low resolution. Should I rescan?

For viewing on a screen it is enough. For an archive and reprinting we work at 600 dpi or more, and important photos are worth scanning once more, properly.
