The short answer: Yes, both photos and slides fade — but they run on two different clocks. A Kodachrome slide sitting in a dry, dark, cool box can hold its colour for many decades, and in genuinely cold, stable conditions well past a century; yet that very same slide loses colour quickly once it goes through a projector again and again. Ektachrome and other E-6 slides handle projection better, but they are noticeably less stable in dark storage. Colour C-41 prints from the 1970s and 1980s are the weakest link: the US National Archives (NARA) states plainly that colour negatives, slides and prints are vulnerable to fading within decades when kept at room temperature. Silver-based black-and-white is the most stable material of all.
Almost every customer who walks into the studio holds the opposite assumption: that a printed photo tucked into an album is "safe", and that a slide — small, transparent, sitting quietly in a drawer — is forever. In reality both materials age, each by its own rules. The difference is that a print confesses its damage (it yellows, goes pink, flattens out) while a slide hides it until you hold it up to the light. This page breaks down the colour clock of each material, what speeds it up, and what you can actually do today — without panic and without scare tactics.
What is actually fading — the silver or the colour?
To understand why different materials age at different speeds, you need to separate two families. A classic black-and-white photograph is made of metallic silver grains suspended in gelatin — a chemically stable material that, if properly processed and washed, can last a century or more. A colour photograph is built from three layers of organic dyes (cyan, magenta, yellow) formed during development. Organic dyes are molecules that break down over time, and each layer breaks down at its own rate.
- Dark fading: a slow chemical process that keeps running even while the image is shut inside an album. It is driven mainly by heat and humidity, not by light at all.
- Light fading: damage caused by radiation — sunlight, room lighting and above all a powerful projector lamp. It depends on cumulative dose, not on any single event.
- Imbalance between layers: when one of the three breaks down faster than the others, the whole image takes on a cast — pink, bluish or yellowish. That cast is what the eye reads as "an old photo".
- Physical and mechanical damage: scratches, fingerprints, mould and adhesive — unrelated to the dyes, but usually arriving alongside them.
Why does Kodachrome survive a drawer but burn in a projector?
Kodachrome is a technological outlier. Unlike almost every other colour film, its dyes are not present in the film in advance — they are created during the complex K-14 development process, which was only ever performed by licensed labs. The result is a set of unusually stable dyes, which is why Kodachrome's dark-storage performance is excellent: slides from the 1950s and 1960s that were kept in a dry, cool box often reach our bench with nearly full colour.
That same chemistry, however, is less forgiving of light. Wilhelm Imaging Research devoted an entire book chapter to projector-caused fading of 35mm colour slides, and the practical conclusion is simple: what matters is the total accumulated projection hours, not any single screening. A slide shown dozens of times at family evenings absorbed a dose of light and heat that cannot be undone. This is the irony that runs through the whole page — it is precisely the beloved slides, the ones pulled out again and again for guests, that suffered most. And it is no accident that Kodak's own technical publications recommended making a dedicated duplicate for projection and keeping the original in the dark.
Why do Ektachrome and E-6 behave the other way round?
Ektachrome, Fujichrome and the rest of the E-6 family are built differently: the dyes already sit in the film layers before development. That made them convenient for fast processing in local labs — they were very common in Israel — but the price was lower stability in dark storage. The typical signature of an aged E-6 slide is a drift toward pink-magenta or toward yellow, depending on the generation and emulsion.
On the other hand, under repeated projection E-6 materials hold up reasonably well, sometimes better than Kodachrome. So the rule "a slide lasts forever" simply does not exist: everything depends on which film it is and what life it has lived. The Image Permanence Institute, the leading research body in the world on image permanence, describes exactly this behaviour — with fast films such as Ektachrome, dye fading occurs over a relatively short period and shows up as loss of saturation and a shift in colour balance. And what about colour prints and negatives from the 1970s?
This is the most common damage we see on the scanning bench. C-41 colour prints made between the mid-1960s and the mid-1980s came from an era when long-term stability was not yet a headline industry goal, and they are well known for fading and yellowing — even inside a completely closed album. Wedding albums from those years often arrive almost entirely pink-orange.
Two classic household accelerators make it worse. The first is the magnetic album — the one with tacky cardboard pages and a plastic sheet laid over them. The adhesive yellows, hardens and bonds to the back of the print, and in many cases the photo cannot be lifted without tearing. The second is where the box lives: a rooftop storeroom, a damp shelter, a cupboard on an exterior wall. The Library of Congress, on its page about the care, handling and storage of photographs, recommends a relatively dry (30–50% relative humidity), cool (70°F / 21°C or below) and above all stable environment — and advises avoiding attics, basements and exterior walls.

What can you do right now without turning your home into an archive?
The good news is that both clocks — the dye clock and the light clock — slow down dramatically with a few simple decisions. You do not need an archival freezer; the National Archives does recommend cold storage for highly significant colour collections, but for a family album the following is enough.
- Get the boxes out of the storeroom and the attic. An interior cupboard in an air-conditioned room is a huge upgrade over anything living beyond the heat or humidity line.
- Abandon magnetic albums. If the prints still lift away easily, move them to acid-free sleeves. If they have bonded to the page, do not pull; scanning is done through the page itself.
- Stop projecting originals. If there are slides you still love to show, project a digital file through a video projector instead. The original stays in the dark — and that is exactly the difference between another decade and another generation.
- Scan in order of risk. Colour prints and negatives from the 1970s and 1980s first, then E-6 slides, and finally well-stored black-and-white and Kodachrome. That list is the priority queue.
- Do not throw the originals away after scanning. A file is a copy, not a replacement. A well-kept original can be rescanned later with better technology.

Have my Kodachrome slides already faded?
It depends almost entirely on their history. Kodachrome kept in a closed box in a cool, dry place is considered exceptionally stable in the dark and can hold up for many decades, even past a century. A slide that went through a projector dozens of times, by contrast, absorbed cumulative light damage that cannot be reversed. The simple test is to hold a slide up to a window: if the shadows look pale and the contrast is flat compared with other slides from the same roll, projection most likely took its toll.
If my photos are in a closed album, are they protected?
A closed album protects against light, but not against heat and humidity — and those are the main engines of dark fading. C-41 colour prints from the 1970s and 1980s are known to fade and yellow even inside an album that was never opened. Magnetic albums with tacky pages are particularly harmful: the adhesive yellows and hardens, and the prints bond to the page so firmly that they cannot be removed without tearing.
What should I scan first — the prints or the slides?
The priority is set by risk, not by quantity. Colour prints and negatives from the 1970s and 1980s come first, as the most vulnerable material; then Ektachrome and other E-6 slides, which are less stable in dark storage; and finally silver-based black-and-white and well-stored Kodachrome, which are the most stable. Any item already showing a strong pink or yellow cast jumps straight to the front of the queue.
Does scanning stop the fading?
Scanning does not cure the original — the dye will keep breaking down at its own rate — but it freezes the current state into a file that does not age. That is why scanning counts as a practical preservation step: once a file exists, any future fading of the original no longer erases the picture. We recommend keeping the originals after scanning too, in acid-free sleeves in a relatively cool, dry environment.
