Short answer: A tape that got wet is not automatically a lost tape, but the first hours decide the outcome. Three things save it: get the cassettes out of the water and out of soaked cardboard, never put a wet tape into a player, and never let it dry with mud, sand or salt trapped between the windings. If the water was clean, air-dry at room temperature with the cassette on its edge in a cool, ventilated room. If it was floodwater, seawater or sewage, do not dry it yourself: it needs a controlled rinse in distilled water, and until it reaches a lab it is better off damp than letting contamination dry inside it.
This guide follows what the major preservation bodies say about magnetic media exposed to water — the Library of Congress, the US National Archives (NARA), the IASA TC-05 standard, and the film-handling guidance of the NFPF and FIAF. We will not promise recovery. What we can say, after more than 5,000,000 frames and images through our studio, is that most of the irreversible damage reaching our bench was not caused by the water, but by what happened to the tape in the days afterwards.
What should you do in the first hours?
At this stage the goal is not to dry the tape. It is to stop things getting worse: out of standing water, away from heat, and no chance for dirt to dry between the windings.
- Remove the soaked packaging: cardboard and paper inserts hold water against the shell for hours after the flood is over. Bin the wet cardboard.
- Drain, do not wipe inside: hold the cassette upright over a sink and let the water run out. Wipe only the outer shell; never push paper or a swab into the tape opening.
- Separate by water type: clean-water tapes and mud or sewage tapes are handled differently, and contamination travels by contact and by damp air.
- Photograph the labels now: ink on a wet label smears quickly, and the handwriting is often the only record of what is on the tape.
- Bring the room humidity down: air conditioning on dry mode and a fan moving room-temperature air beat any heat source.

What must you never do?
Every item comes from real damage we have seen, not from theoretical caution.
- Never play a wet tape: damp tape clings to itself and to the spinning head. One playback can lift the oxide layer — the layer that carries the picture — and smear it across the transport.
- Never let it dry with mud, sand or salt inside: as the water evaporates the contaminants harden between the windings, and on the first playback they act like sandpaper along the whole tape.
- No hairdryer, oven, radiator, direct sun or parked car: heat warps the polyester base, and a warped tape no longer meets the head at the correct angle. No software repairs that.
- Do not freeze magnetic tape: freezing buys time for paper, books and photographs, but preservation guidance for magnetic media does not recommend it. Ice between the windings adds mechanical damage.
- Do not open the shell at home: without the right tools, a clean surface and gloves you put dust and skin oil straight onto the tape.
- Do not spray alcohol, solvents or penetrating oil: these attack the binder holding the magnetic particles onto the tape. Real cleaning uses distilled water under control.
Does it matter whether it was clean water, floodwater or sewage?
This is the question that decides whether you can start at home or need a lab from the outset. Clean water only wets. Dirty water wets and leaves something behind, and that residue is what destroys the tape later.

How do you dry a tape at home, and where is the limit?
Home drying suits one situation only: clean water, no mud, no smell, and a tape that did not sit submerged for days. If any condition fails, skip to the next section.
- Room temperature, full stop: a comfortable air-conditioned room is the right environment. Any focused heat source, however gentle it looks, warps the tape.
- Cassette on its edge: stand it like a book so remaining water drains downwards instead of sitting on the tape pack.
- Moving air, not warm air: a fan circulating room air helps; a hairdryer destroys.
- Patience: proper drying is measured in a few days, not hours. Every shortcut you can think of is heat, and heat is damage.
- Do not wind and do not peek: damp tape moving against damp tape strips the coating.

Why does moisture keep damaging a tape after it dries?
Water does not really leave the moment the shell looks dry. Magnetic tape is a layer of magnetic particles held onto a polyester base by a binder — a thin polymer adhesive — and that binder is sensitive to humidity. In a process called hydrolysis it absorbs moisture and slowly breaks down. The familiar result is known in the trade as sticky-shed: the tape turns tacky, clings to itself and to the guides, and sheds material onto the heads. This is why every preservation document, from the Library of Congress to IASA TC-05, repeats the same principle — cool and dry. Not cold and frozen, not warm and airy: cool, dry and above all stable.
A soaking is a sharp spike in humidity, so even a tape that dried and looks fine has spent time in conditions that accelerate that chemistry. When does this become a job for a lab?
A few signs are unambiguous. If any one is present, home treatment only adds damage:
- Water that was not clean: flood, sewage, seawater or mud. The rinse must be distilled water under control, not a tap.
- Windings stuck together: never separate tape by hand; forced separation peels off the image layer.
- Visible mould or a musty smell: spores spread through the air and contaminate neighbouring tapes.
- A warped, cracked or jammed shell: a damaged mechanism breaks the tape before it starts to travel.
- A tape played by mistake after getting wet: the situation is now far more delicate, and it must not be run again.
- Unique, unrepeatable footage: a wedding, a birth, a grandparent who is no longer with us. No case for experimenting.
In the lab the order is reversed: open and clean first, dry under control second, and only then run the tape — usually once, on a dedicated deck, straight into a digital capture.
