If a tape squeals in the deck, sheds brown residue or simply stops moving, it likely suffers from sticky-shed syndrome: the binder holding the magnetic layer has absorbed moisture and turned gummy. Playing it in that state scrapes the recording off the tape — permanently.
The recovery process
- The tape is baked at a low, controlled temperature for several hours, temporarily re-hardening the binder.
- Within the recovery window, the tape is played once on a calibrated deck and captured to digital.
- The digital file becomes the new master; the original tape has done its final job.
Studio HanaBi is one of the few studios in Israel offering controlled tape baking. It applies to reel-to-reel audio, cassettes and video formats. If a tape matters to you and no longer plays — do not keep trying decks. Contact us first.
